Apple said to be negotiating with telecoms for e-SIM card launch

The GSMA, a group representing several mobile carriers across the world, is currently in negotiations with Apple and Samsung for the launch of electronic SIM cards. So-called e-SIMs would allow customers to switch between carriers almost instantly, without the need to get a new physical SIM from their carrier. Carriers across the world, including AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, and Telefónica are all expected to support e-SIMs.

According to Financial Times, both Apple and Samsung are on board for the specification:

"We have got everyone back on one point, with Apple and Samsung agreeing to be part of that specification," said Ms Bouverot. "We have been working with them and others to create an industry solution for machines and will agree a solution for consumer electronics."

Apple introduced their own Apple SIM last year with the iPad Air 2, which allowed for similar carrier switching. However, it has seen support from only three carriers in the US, and only one in the UK.

The technical specification for the embedded SIM is still being finalized, and it will be at least a year before it finds its way to new devices.
